Defiance is the second play in a trilogy of plays by Shanley about American hierarchy. The first play in the trilogy is the award-winning Doubt.

Defiance is set in the spring of 1971 on the United States Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Two officers, one black and one white, are on a collision course over race, women, and the high cost of doing the right thing. The play is about power, love, and responsibility — who has it, who wants it, and who deserves it.
